Biddle Rests Ailing Hip For Playoff Push

Lefty pitching prospect Jesse Biddle has been on a hot streak for the Class A Lakewood BlueClaws. In 8 games since the South Atlantic League All-star break, Biddle has posted a 2-1 record with a 1.97 ERA and a .216 batting average against.

Despite missing a recent start with a right hip strain, Biddle, who has been dealing with discomfort in the ailing area throughout his most recent outings, is confident that he'll be back soon and be as good as ever.

"It's nothing serious. I could pitch, but it's better to be safe than sorry. We don't want to push this and have it get any worse, so I'm taking break to let it heal," Biddle stated.

The 19-year-old Biddle and his BlueClaws teammates are in the midst of the playoff hunt with roughly four weeks left in the regular season, as they sit 2 1/2 games behind Kannapolis in the Northern division standings for the second half title. Lakewood has won the SAL championship in each of the previous two seasons.

Chosen by the Phillies with the 27th overall selection in the 2011 draft, Biddle, a Philadelphia native, sports a 5-7 overall record with a 3.20 ERA in his first full professional season.

Recently, right-handed pitcher Brody Colvin was promoted from Class A Advanced Clearwater to Double-A Reading. Prior to the 2012 season, Colvin, who turns 22-years-old on Tuesday, was ranked as PhilliesNation's 6th best prospect . This season, following some ups and downs, it's unclear where Colvin will rank next preseason. Earlier this year, Colvin, a Louisiana native, was removed from Clearwater's starting rotation and moved to the bullpen to relax and improve his mental approach. With a massively impressive campaign in 2011 for the Class A Advanced Clearwater Threshers, right-handed starting pitcher Trevor May locked down his spot as Philadelphia's top prospect and is on the fast track toward the big leagues. He is the reigning Paul Owens Award winner, given to the top pitcher and player in the Phillies' developmental system each year. In 27 starts with the Threshers in 2011, May posted a 10-8 record with a 3.63 ERA, while striking out a Florida State League leading 208 batters in 151 1/3 innings.
