Biddle Rests Ailing Hip For Playoff Push

Lefty pitching prospect Jesse Biddle has been on a hot streak for the Class A Lakewood BlueClaws. In 8 games since the South Atlantic League All-star break, Biddle has posted a 2-1 record with a 1.97 ERA and a .216 batting average against.

Despite missing a recent start with a right hip strain, Biddle, who has been dealing with discomfort in the ailing area throughout his most recent outings, is confident that he'll be back soon and be as good as ever.

"It's nothing serious. I could pitch, but it's better to be safe than sorry. We don't want to push this and have it get any worse, so I'm taking break to let it heal," Biddle stated.

The 19-year-old Biddle and his BlueClaws teammates are in the midst of the playoff hunt with roughly four weeks left in the regular season, as they sit 2 1/2 games behind Kannapolis in the Northern division standings for the second half title. Lakewood has won the SAL championship in each of the previous two seasons.

Chosen by the Phillies with the 27th overall selection in the 2011 draft, Biddle, a Philadelphia native, sports a 5-7 overall record with a 3.20 ERA in his first full professional season.

Recently, right-handed pitcher Brody Colvin was promoted from Class A Advanced Clearwater to Double-A Reading. Prior to the 2012 season, Colvin, who turns 22-years-old on Tuesday, was ranked as PhilliesNation's 6th best prospect . With a powerful bat and outstanding skills behind the dish, Alfaro could become a fast moving performer for his new organization. Originally signed by the Rangers for a reported $1.3 million in 2010 at the age of 16, the Colombia native would make his professional debut in the Dominican Summer League that same year. In 48 games, the righty hitting Alfaro posted a .221 average and a home run along with 23 RBI. The following year, with Class A short-season Spokane, the talented youngster tallied a .300 average with six homers and 23 RBI. In 2012 with full season Class A level Hickory, he batted .261 with five home runs, 34 RBI and 16 stolen bases in 74 contests.
