BA ranked Jesse Biddle as the Phils' #1 prospect On Monday, Baseball America released its annual list of top 10 prospects in the Phillies organization . The rankings feature some plenty of names that are deserving of considerable regard, but also includes some debatable placement. Generally, I feel that prospect rankings issued by national writers or their publications are a somewhat questionable, as such members of the media do not get to see many of the same players on a regular basis and, as such, must rely on other people's accumulated scouting reports and other material to publish full reviews.  Limitations of how frequently a player is viewed over a season can prevent an analyst from witnessing development or getting to see the type of work individuals put in outside the lines.  A player's progress is key in reviewing his potential and in ranking him among other prospects, as are his age, his proximity to helping the big league team and other factors as well. ...

With the release of Baseball America's list of top ten Phillies prospects on Monday, some players will be receiving some much deserved attention. One in particular, Jarred Cosart , is a fireballing right-handed starting pitcher with the potential to move up the organizational rankings very quickly. The 20-year-old Cosart has excellent command and a superior fastball that regularly hits 97 MPH. As a member of the Class A Lakewood BlueClaws in 2010, Cosart posted a 7-3 record with a 3.79 ERA and 77 strike outs in 71 1/3 innings pitched. He projects to be the type of pitcher whose presence could effect the odds involved in Sports Betting some day, much like Cliff Lee did when news leaked that the Phillies were preparing to sign him this week. Brody Colvin is a 19-year-old starting pitcher for the Class A level Lakewood BlueClaws. Colvin was drafted by the Phillies in the 7th round of last June's amateur draft. After committing to attend LSU, Colvin signed with the Phils on the last possible day last year. Colvin made headlines during the off-season after getting arrested in his hometown in Louisiana and charged with battery and resisting an officer. The 6'3" right-hander has an ERA of 8.00 after 2 starts this month, but that is no reason for alarm, as Colvin is still working on his pitches.
