Sizemore DFA'd, Asche recalled

Cody Asche, image- Jay Floyd Underachieving outfielder Grady Sizemore was designated for assignment to clear room for Cody Asche to return to the big league roster after working to become more versatile defensively in recent weeks. Sizemore, a veteran of nine big league seasons, sported a .245 average with five doubles and six RBI in 39 games with the Phillies this season. The 32-year-old was a three-time All-Star with Cleveland from 2006 to 2008 and is a former Gold Glove winner. The 24-year-old, Asche, posted a .295 average with three doubles, a home run and three RBI in 15 games at Triple-A Lehigh Valley since his demotion to learn how to play left field. On defense, the Phils' 4th round draft choice from 2011 converted 23 of 24 catches. As a member of the big league roster earlier this season, Asche batted .245 with two homers and four RBI in 30 games. Minor League Notes: Franco Leads List of Players Heating Up

Here's a quick stroll through the Phillies' developmental ranks, reviewing some hot and cold performers of late. Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs- Maikel Franco, Image- Jay Floyd Third baseman Maikel Franco has collected nine hits in three games played this month, batting .529 with two doubles, a triple and a homer during those few games. Marquis and Sizemore look solid in IronPigs debuts

Jason Marquis, Image- Jay Floyd Less than a year removed from elbow surgery, right-handed hurler Jason Marquis took to the mound to show the world, but mainly the Phillies, what he can do. Marquis, who was signed by the Phillies earlier this month, made his organizational debut last weekend, earning a win with five innings of shutout baseball for the rookie level Gulf Coast League Phillies. The 35-year-old took the mound in Allentown for the Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Friday, taking a no decision after tossing six-plus innings, allowing three hits and one run while striking out six and walking one. If not for a troubling effort from the IronPigs' bullpen, Marquis would have notched a win. He exited the game in the 7th inning after allowing a lead-off single, which ended a stretch of 10 straight batters retired. Jeremy Horst came on in relief and allowed that runner to score.
