PhoulBallz Interview: Tyler Carr talks Clearwater's combined no-hitter

Tyler Carr, image- Jay Floyd Righty reliever Tyler Carr was already enjoying a very successful season in the Phillies' organization when he contributed three frames to the Class A Advanced Clearwater Threshers' no-hitter on Saturday night.  Now, even the organization's big league manager is recognizing his efforts. After opening the season with Class A Lakewood and looking strong out of that club's bullpen, the 23-year-old was promoted to Clearwater, where he has continued to shine.. Carr, who was the Phillies' 31st round draft selection last year out of South Alabama, helped starter Kyle Glogoski and bullpen mate Keylan Killgore in tossing the team's first nine inning no-hitter since July 2016. In 20 total appearances this season, Carr, who is listed at five-feet-10, 175 pounds, sports a 3-1 record with two saves, a 1.25 ERA, a .197 batting average against and a 9.0 K/9 mark. I talked with Carr about the Theshers' no-no, where it ranks a...

In five innings, the 20-year-old right-hander struck out five Tortugas batters and walked a pair.  He threw 64 pitches, 45 for strikes. The New Zealand native, Glogoski, made way for 23-year-old righty Tyler Carr, who worked the next three frames.  Carr, the Phillies' 31st round draft pick last year out of South Alabama, struck out four, while walking one. Left-hander Keylan Killgore tossed the last inning to close it out with a one-two-three effort thanks to a remarkable catch...

Lakewood advances to SAL finals on the back of Howard's no-hitter

Spencer Howard, image- Jay Floyd LAKEWOOD, NJ-- Leaving his coaches struggling for words and forcing his tough guy manager to admit he was tearing up, Friday was the best day of Lakewood pitcher Spencer Howard 's life. The right-hander was electric, dominating division rival Kannapolis (White Sox affiliate) in a nine-inning complete game no-hit shutout that clinched a Northern Division Championship and a trip to the South Atlantic League Championship Series for the Class A Lakewood BlueClaws. Howard, a second round draft choice of the Phillies last year, struck out nine, walked one, hit a batter and tossed a wild pitch, but held the Intimidators without a hit or any runs, in an outing that was as impressive a performance as you could see. Waves of emotions came over everyone at FirstEnergy Park.  Some expressed their joy with excitement and cheering.  Others, like BlueClaws manager Marty Malloy , felt a little different. "I'm just at a loss for words," M...

Arauz tosses no-hitter for Clearwater

Harold Arauz, image- Jay Floyd With just two outs remaining to wrap up a perfect game, Clearwater hurler Harold Arauz issued a walk to Ft. Myers third baseman Brandon Lopez.  Arauz would bounce back to retire the next two batters, wrapping up a no-hitter to lock down a 2-0 victory. Earlier in the day, the Thresher lost game one of the double header by a score of 4-0.  In the minor leagues, games of double headers are slated as seven-inning contests. In his seven frames on Sunday, the 22-year-old Arauz was dominant, as he would strike out 10 Miracle batters in his third start of the season.  The right-handed Panama native would see his record go to 4-2 with the Class A Advanced Threshers on the season.  The strong effort on Sunday saw his ERA with Clearwater drop to 2.03.  Arauz, a six-foot-two 185-pounder opened the season with Class A Lakewood where he posted a 1-2 record with a 1.99 ERA in eight relief appearances. He also appeared in one game this se...

Lakewood's Fanti goes distance for second no-hitter of season

Nick Fanti, image- Jay Floyd Lefty starter Nick Fanti Jr. recorded another historical moment this season, as he went the distance, shutting down the Charleston RiverDogs’ (Yankees affiliate) offense to record a no-hitter on Monday at Lakewood’s FirstEnergy Park.   In nine innings of work, the 20-year-old struck out 12 and walked one on 113 pitches to put his name in the history books and improve his season record to 7-2 in 15 starts.    Fanti, the Phillies’ 31 st round draft selection in 2015, previously helped Lakewood notch a no-hitter this season when he tossed 8 2/3 innings without surrendering a safety against Columbia on May 6 th .  His roommate at the time, reliever Trevor Bettencourt, entered the game to record the final out.  Bettencourt has since been promoted to Class A Advanced Clearwater.    The six-foot-two 185-pounder, Fanti, stated that he received a congratulatory text message from Bettencourt after Mo...

Lakewood's Fanti, Bettencourt combine for no-hitter

Nick Fanti and Trevor Bettencourt, image- Lakewood BlueClaws With two outs in the ninth inning and two runners on, Lakewood starter Nick Fanti's no-hit bid was turned over to someone he lives and works very closely with every day.  His roommate.   Fanti, who was a 31st round draft selection by the Phillies in 2015, was off to a terrific start this season entering the night, but his effort on Saturday night will certainly draw some major attention. The 20-year-old lefty hurler came within one out of becoming just the third pitcher in team history to toss a complete game no-hitter. He sailed through eight innings on the road, dominating the Columbia Fireflies (Mets affiliate), walking just two batters. To open the final frame, Fireflies backstop Ali Sanchez reached on an error by Lakewood third baseman Danny Zardon.  Next, Columbia third baseman Milton Ramos grounded into a fielders choice that erased Sanchez.  Fireflies lead-off man, shortstop Andres ...

Hamels notches first career no-hitter in Chicago

In what could have been a farewell by Cole Hamels to Philadelphia, the veteran lefty tossed a no-hitter on Saturday at Chicago's Wrigley Field. En route to his first career nine-inning hitless bid, Hamels struck out 13 and walked two to move his season record to 6-7 while tossing 129 pitches to mark his first win since May 23rd. The shutout victory could also serve as an up close audition as Hamels, who has been the subject of loads of trade talks in recent weeks, has been rumored to be of interest to the Cubs, who are 1 1/2 game out of the National League's second Wild Card spot. The Phillies won the contest 5-0, led by Ryan Howard 's 17th home run of the season, a three-run blast in the third inning. The game marked the first time the Cubs have been no-hit since the Dodgers' Sandy Koufax accomplished the feat in 1965.

Lakewood Trio Combines for No-hitter

In his fourth start of the season, Class A Lakewood right-hander Jeb Stefan tossed six innings to start off what would result in the BlueClaws' fourth no-hitter in team history, in a 1-0 victory over the Rome Braves at home on Thursday. Along with Stefan, Dominican righty Ramon Oviedo tossed two perfect frames while right-hander Chris Burgess wrapped up the historic feat with a hitless ninth. Stefan, 23, was the Phillies' 22nd round draft choice last year out of Louisiana Tech University. In 26 games (four starts), the 6-foot-4 225 pounder has a 3-4 record along with 3.78 ERA and a .228 batting average against. Ramon Oviedo, photo- Jay Floyd The 22-year-old Oviedo, who had a 1-7 record along with a 9.15 ERA in nine appearances for Lakewood last season, struck out four Braves in his 2013 BlueClaws debut. Burgess was a 26th round draft selection this year our of Oklahoma Christian. The 22-year-old transferred from Oklahoma University last year and quickly became...

Halladay Untouchable in Playoff Opener

In the opening game of the 2010 National League Division Series, Phillies ace Roy Halladay threw the second no-hitter in MLB post-season history, to lead his club past the Cincinnati Reds, 4-0. Way back on October 8th, 1956, the Yankees' Don Larsen threw a perfect game in the World series against the Dodgers. On Wednesday, Halladay threw 9 hitless innings, striking out 8 batters, with 104 pitches...79 of which were strikes, against the National League's most potent offense. As a team, Cincinnati led the league in batting average (.272), HR (188) and RBI (761) during the regular season. It was the second time Halladay held a team hitless this year, as he hurled a perfect game against the Marlins in Florida on May 29th. Halladay even contributed to the Phillies' victory with his bat, driving in a run with an RBI single in the 2nd inning, off of Reds starting pitcher Edinson Volquez. The excitement level for Halladay's tremendous effort spread beyond the Delaware Valley. T...

Sunday School: History Lesson 15

Charles "Chick" Fraser was a right handed starting pitcher for the Phillies from 1899-1900, then again from 1902-1904. He made his major league debut in 1896 for the Louisville Colonels. Fraser struggled in his playing days, prior to the Phillies, posting a 36-66 overall record. Following the 1898 season, the Phillies purchased Chick Fraser from the Cleveland Spiders for the price of $1,000. That contract purchase would prove to be a great steal for the Phillies when the generally wild Fraser, who led the NL in walks in 1896, won 21 games in 1899 with four shutouts. In 1900, Chick won 16 games and led the team in ERA. Fraser left the Phillies to play for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1901. Fraser would then lead the American League in walks, but won 22 games for the A's. Chick Fraser is the only pitcher to win 20 games for both the Phillies and the Athletics. A successful legal challenge by the Phillies, over Fraser's departure, would return Fraser, who left for a lar...
