Tyler Viza on opening night in Lakewood, image-20/20 Visual Media Kicking off their home schedule on Thursday evening the Lakewood BlueClaws saw a familiar result. For the 12th time in 14 seasons, the Class A affiliate of the Phillies dropped their home opener, as they fell 6-0 to the Hagerstown (MD) Suns. The 19-year-old was charged with five runs (four earned) on five hits over five-plus innings of work while striking out five and walking just one. Viza, a six-foot-three 170-pounder felt like he executed his game plan on the mound, but cited some costly pitches in the 6th frame as the difference in the contest. Taking the mound as the IronPigs' opening day starter against Boston affiliate Pawtucket, the 24-year-old tossed six scoreless innings while allowing two hits, two walks and notching five strike outs. Buchanan has displayed considerable improvement over the past year and received positive feedback from the likes of Roy Halladay , Cliff Lee , A.J. Burnett and Kyle Kendrick while pitching with the big league team in spring training. Coaches and veterans alike were pleased with his pace, the way he attacks the strike zone and his manner of challenging opposing batters. Phillies at Braves: 2013 Opening Day Game Preview

At long last, the new season is upon us.  With the Phillies out of the postseason for the first time in six seasons last year, the time between their last contest and the following season's opener was certainly longer than most fans in the Philly region had grown accustomed to.  But, after a considerable wait, a chance to reclaim the top spot in the National League East division is about to begin. Opening the season on the road, the Phillies will send lefty ace Cole Hamels to the mound at Atlanta's Turner Field to take on right-handed veteran Tim Hudson . BlueClaws Record First Ever Home Opener Victory

It took the club 11 tries, but the Class A Lakewood BlueClaws finally won a home opener on Thursday night. Behind solid pitching from lefty starter Mario Hollands, Tyler Knigge and Eric Pettis, the two-time defending South Atlantic League champions locked down the 2-0 win over the White Sox affiliate, the Kannapolis Intimidators. The offense for both teams was minimal, but Lakewood first baseman Jim Murphy got the 'Claws on the board in the 2nd inning, when he led off the frame with a deep drive onto the left field berm off of Kannapolis right-hander, former Monmouth University stand out, Ryan Buch. "Our pitching was the story. And obviously, Murphy coming up with a big hit, in his first at bat, just to get us on the board was key," said first-year BlueClaws manager Chris Truby. On an evening that began with the raising of the team's second straight title banner, the BlueClaws didn't get their second hit of the game until the 7th inning when third baseman Jeremy...

Schedule of Events For Phillies Opening Day

With cold temperatures, rain and some snow in the forecast on April 1st, it's no wonder the Phillies' public relations department didn't follow their normal procedures in releasing the itinerary for gameday festivities for opening day ahead of time. The weather isn't slated to be very normal, so why would anything else be? Courtesy of TheMorningCall.com, here's the schedule of events for the 2011 season opener at Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park. 7:00 a.m.- Majestic Clubhouse Store opens. Hot off the presses: New Phillies magazine featuring the Phillies starting rotation on the front cover. 10:35 a.m.- All gates open. All fans will receive a 2’x3’ replica of the 2010 National League East Champions Pennant (that will fly above Ashburn Alley all season), compliments of Modell’s Sporting Goods. BlueClaws Drop Ninth Straight Home Opener

The pregame festivities were tussled a bit by the poor weather. But the crowd of 6,794 still witnessed the 2009 South Atlantic League Championship banner raised by season ticket holder Ed Rausch after a delay. They also got to see a flyover, that was planned to coincide with the national anthem, but happened out of sync, as the 108th Air Refueling Wing plane was running low and fuel and had to return to McGuire Air Force base prior to additional bad weather hitting the area. And as the opening day proceedings didn't go the way the home town folks would have liked, neither did the result of the game. On a night delayed by rain, the momentous season opener at the home park ended as Lakewood has grown accustomed...with a loss. The BlueClaws have lost each of their last 9 home openers. Lakewood starter Brody Colvin took the loss against the Marlins affiliate Greensboro Grasshoppers. A 7th round pick in last year's amateur draft, Colvin walked 3 batters in the 3rd inning, two of ...

Rollins & Werth Suffer Injuries

Opening day ceremonies had been completed, the lineups had been announced and the players took the field to warm up, while United States Navy Leap Frogs parachuted into short centerfield to deliver the first balls to the field. During sprint and stretch time, Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins felt pain in his right calf muscle and was quickly replaced as the leadoff hitter in the Phillies batting order by Juan Castro. Some folks have blown off any worry about about Brad Lidge's current injury and delayed debut to the season for Brad Lidge, as he had a similar set back in 2008 and parlayed that into a "perfect" season and the Phillies won the World Series. Well allow me to remind you that Rollins experienced an injury (to his ankle) and a trip to the disabled list in April 2008, returned in May, and that same championship result happened. Omens? Perhaps. With a MRI scheduled for today, Jimmy's Red Bull promoted "longest batted ball" record stunt was postponed...
