Bisenius Shining in White Sox System

Former Phillie Joe Bisenius is making a case to earn his third promotion to the big leagues. The right-handed hurler, who was a member of the Phillies' bullpen at the dawn of the team's recent run of four straight division titles and spent time last season with the Washington Nationals is now pitching tremendously for the White Sox Triple A affiliate, the Charlotte Knights. Bisenius, an Iowa native, was originally selected in the 12th round of the 2004 amateur draft by the Phillies. After quickly rising through the Philadelphia developmental ranks, Bisenius made his Major League debut with the Phillies in 2007, tossing two scoreless innings of relief in April. However, struggles in the minors in each of the following two seasons and in 2010 spring training, got Bisenius released. Last season, Bisenius was signed as a free agent by the Nationals and worked his way through three levels of their system, before making 5 appearances with the big club late in the season, as a Septemb...

Series Preview: Phillies at Nationals, 9/27-9/29

Already locked into a guaranteed playoff spot, the Phillies (93-63) stand just one win, or one Braves loss, away from clinching a team record 4th straight division title. Some have pointed out that it would be fitting to do it in game 1 of this week's series in Washington, as it would be the exact way the Phillies began the 2010 campaign, with Roy Halladay on the mound against the Nationals (67-89). Washington will counter with lefty John Lannan, who has a 7.27 ERA in 2 home starts this season against Philadelphia. Jimmy Rollins is expected to start at short stop for the Phillies for the first time since September 8th. Rollins has been sidelined in recent weeks with a hamstring issue. Rollins returned to action on Sunday, going 0-for-1 as a pinch hitter and playing the field. The Phillies have won 10 of the 15 meetings with Washington to date this season. Read ahead for details on the pitching match ups and tons more information. Monday, 7:05pm. Roy Haladay (20-10, 2.53 ERA) vs. J...

Minor Leaguers Released, 3 Lakewood Champs Among Those Cut

The Phillies announced several minor league cuts on Monday. Among the released players are 2009 Lakewood BlueClaws first baseman Jeremy Hamilton, '09 BlueClaws pitchers Freddy Ballestas & Ryan Bergh, former Phillies pitcher Joe Bisenius and veteran Major Leaguer Brad Wilkerson Hamilton, a fifth round pick in the 2008 amateur draft, hit .255 in 88 games with Lakewood last season. His .701 OPS for the season was not quite impressive for a first baseman and was never good enough to earn much playing time over starting first baseman Jim Murphy, who was taken 12 rounds after Hamilton in the same draft, and his .860 OPS in 2009. Ballestas, a Venezuela native, was signed as an amateur free agent in 2004. Last year for the SAL champion BlueClaws he appeared in 18 games (4 starts), posting a 4.98 ERA and striking out 46 batters in 47 innings pitched. Ryan Bergh in a pre-season bullpen session with coach Bob Milacki Bergh spent some time closing games for Lakewood in 2009. Bergh posted a...

The Whole Organization is .500

We're all aware that our Philadelphia Phillies have a .500 winning percentage with a 4-4 record. Low A Ball Lakewood is also .500 at 4-4 Those double A Reading Phillies are .500 also, at 3-3. Triple A Lehigh Valley and High A Clearwater total out to .500 with their 2-5 and 5-2 records respectively. A look around the stat boards after just over a week of minor leagues games delivers some surprises... Lakewood's first baseman Jim Murphy is roughing up South Atlantic League pitching. His .522 batting avg. and 1.288 OPS through 6 games are very impressive. Meanwhile, top catching prospect Travis D'Arnaud has a .207 batting avg. in 7 games. D'Arnaud does have a homer and 6 RBI in those 7 games though, so don't count him out. 23 year-old Clearwater first baseman, Matthew Rizzotti has 7 RBI in 6 games with a .476 batting avg. and a 1.187 OPS to go along with them, while OF prospect Dominic Brown struggles. Brown's .231 average and 2 RBI through 5 games is small time, b...
