Minor League Notebook: Injuries, Signings and Stats

Mario Hollands Lefty hurler Mario Hollands , who is on the disabled list for the Class A Advanced Clearwater Threshers, is not currently ailing and is spending time with the Phils’ extended spring training team until further notice. Pitching at four levels of the organization’s developmental system last season, the 24-year-old posted a 7-9 record with a 4.55 ERA and a .282 batting average against in 27 outings (18 starts). Right-handed reliever Kenny Giles , who also opened the 2013 season on the disabled list for the Threshers, is dealing with an oblique strain. There is no known time frame for the Phillies’ 2011 7th round draft selection's return. Last season, with Class A Lakewood and Clearwater, the 22-year-old tallied a 4-3 record with eight saves, a 3.51 ERA and a 12.18 K/9 mark in 39 contests. PhoulBallz Interview: Stephen Malcolm

Infielder Stephen Malcolm joined the Class A Lakewood BlueClaws last weekend after a solid 6 weeks in extended spring training.  Thus far in South Atlantic League play, the 22-year-old Malcolm has gone 1-for-7 with a stolen base, but is slated to get playing time at both second base and shortstop. An 8th round draft selection by the Phillies in 2010, Malcolm missed the entire 2011 season after he was sent home for disciplinary reasons in April. In 2010, after signing as a pro, Malcolm posted a .253 batting average with 3 doubles and 10 RBI in 27 games with the Gulf Coast League Phillies. Recently, I spoke with Stephen about his promotion, working closely with his manager, former Phillies All-Star Mickey Morandini, his feelings toward the Phillies' brass and plenty more.  Check out the media player below to hear the full interview. ____________________________________________________ You can follow PhoulBallz on Twitter by clicking HERE . Steve Noworyta Interview

Last week at the Phillies' winter banquet stop in Lakewood, NJ, I had the opportunity to chat with the team's assistant director of minor league operations Steve Noworyta. Among the developmental topics we discussed, he commented on a pair of players who have had disciplinary issues, namely Stephen Malcolm ( sent home by the Phils for the full 2011 season ) and Zach Collier (50 game suspension related to banned substances, beginning at the start of the 2012 season). I also asked Noworyta about the recent rookie developmental program in Philadelphia, lefty pitcher Jesse Biddle as well as last year's draft class. To hear the full interview, including some unfortunate background noise, check out the media player below. _____________________________________________________________ You can follow PhoulBallz on Twitter by clicking HERE . Phils Prospect Malcolm Sent Home For Misconduct

Stephen Malcolm, the Phillies' 8th round draft pick in last year's MLB amateur draft, has been sent home from extended spring training by the Phillies. The situation is described as a suspension based on a violation of team rules related to alcohol consumption, according to a source. Malcolm, who turned 21-years-old earlier this month, remains under contract with Philadelphia and hasn't been in Clearwater, at the organization's training facility, since the punishment was handed down roughly two weeks ago. The 6-feet tall, 170-pound shortstop signed with the Phillies for a reported $125,000 last summer after being selected out of San Joaquin Delta Community College in California. Malcolm made his professional debut last season with the Gulf Coast League Phillies. In 27 games, Malcolm posted a .253 batting average with 3 doubles, 10 RBI and 7 steals. ____________________________________________ You can follow PhoulBallz on Twitter by clicking HERE .
