2017 PhoulBallz Prospect Countdown Prelude

As a new year begins, so does my annual prospect ranking, which counts down the Phillies organization’s top 25 rising minor league talents. Over the next several weeks, with the organization in the midst of a rebuild, primed to give many young talents the opportunity to break into the major leagues and show what they can do, I’ll be serving up reviews for each of the top developmental talents that appear to have the brightest futures for the Phillies. Taken into consideration when compiling the list is age, minor league performance relative to levels played, value to the organization as the player’s future potential and proximity to the big leagues. These rankings will not include players over the age of 25 or individuals that have spent lengthy stretches in the big leagues. For example, left-handed reliever Joely Rodriguez, who spent the final month of the regular season on the big league Phillies roster, will not appear on this countdown. Prospect Nation 2016: #12 OF Tyler Goeddel

Goeddel, image- MiLB.com Selected by the Phillies in December's MLB Rule 5 draft, outfielder Tyler Goeddel will get every chance to catch on with the big league club as they open a new season in 2016. Goeddel was taken 41st overall out of high school in the 2011 draft by Tampa Bay. Touted as a five-tool player at the time, he has worked hard to prove those reviews as accurate. Upon making his professional debut in 2012 as a 19-year-old for Class A Bowling Green, Goeddel posted a .246 batting average with six homers, 46 RBI and 30 stolen bases. Repeating that level the following season, he tallied a .249 average with seven home runs, 65 RBI and 30 steals in 112 games. The following year, Goeddel posted a .269 average with six homers, 61 RBI and 20 stolen bases in 113 games for Class A Advanced Charlotte in the Florida State League. In 2015 Goeddel posted a strong offensive campaign, sporting a .279 average with 12 home runs, 72 RBI and 28 steals in 123 games with Doubl...

Phils to take OF Goeddel with first pick in Rule 5 draft

In the midst of trade reports on Wednesday evening, MLB.com's Todd Zolecki confirmed that the Phillies will select Tampa Bay outfielder Tyler Goeddel with the initial pick in Thursday's Rule 5 draft. The 23-year-old California native was originally selected 41st overall by the Rays in 2011. The righty batting Goeddel sported a .279 average with 12 home runs, 72 RBI and 28 stolen bases in 123 games for Double-A Montgomery this year. He was converted from third base to the outfield following the 2014 season. Players are eligible for selection in the Rule 5 draft when they are not on their major league organization's 40 man roster and 1) were signed to a contract at age 19 or older and have been in that organization for four years, OR 2) were signed at age 18 or younger and have been in that organization for five years. Regulations in the big league portion of the Rule 5 draft require the selecting team to keep any drafted player on its 25-man big league roster for ...
