Remember those various "Phanatic Around Town" statues that were placed all throughout Philadelphia as part of a public art project, led by the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation and the Phillies, that features twenty, life-sized Phillie Phanatic statues located at local attractions? Well, the Phanatic statues will soon leave their posts and an online auction for the many uniquely painted Phanatics will begin on Friday, August 27th, to benefit Phillies Charities Inc. Former Phillies pitcher Mitch Williams, along with RadioShack, is calling on all area residents to join him in the LIVESTRONG Challenge 5K walk/run that’s taking place in Philadelphia on Saturday, August 21. As a co-captain of “Team RadioShack”, Mitch is looking to participate in the 5k with as many athletes, cancer fighters and survivors, baseball fans, and everyday folks that the Philadelphia region can get. Wednesday night at Lakewood's FirstEnergy Park the Phillie Phanatic made his annual appearance when he visited the Phillies' local A-Level affiliate, the BlueClaws. The Phanatic brought along the Phillies' World Series trophy from 2008 and the National League championship trophy from 2009, but the glitz and shine that comes along with being the mascot for an elite level Major League Baseball club was not enough for the Phanatic to land a phine young lady that caught his eye. I'm sure nobody missed the story last week about Matthew Clemens, AKA- Vomit Boy , the man who was acting abusive at a Phillies game then had a dispute with off-duty polce captain, Michael Vangelo. Reportedly, Clemens and a friend were drunk while using foul language and spitting, when Vangelo initially complained to security. The friend was ejected, but Clemens stayed behind and proceeded to force himself to vomit onto Vangelo and his 11-year-old daughter. Nearby fans then subdued Clemens until he was removed from the park. Clemens was arrested and charged with assault, reckless endangerment and related charges. On a recent episode of Fox News Channel's nightly comedic round table program Red Eye , panelists discussed the mishap at Citizens Bank Park. Have a look at that clip. Charlie Manuel told the Phillies beat reporters last night that he would consider using "Jay" Happ in a key late inning role. Andy Martino , David Murphy and Scott Lauber all talked about it on their web pages. Some members of the media would prefer to see Pedro Martinez in that role over Happ, however. Using Pedro in a one inning relief role may be risky. His ERA from pitches 1-30 in his appearances with the Phillies is 4.05. Pedro's total ERA after his 30th pitch this season is 2.96. We've all seen him give up those first inning lead off homers a few times. The ERA evidence shows that Pedro struggles early and perhaps takes a little time to settle into a game. There is no room for that as a closer. Personally, I've been an advocate for a closer by committee movement. The Phillies should use preferable and situational match ups to their advantage. This week I heard old news about how when the Indianapolis Colts won the Super Bowl, they gave former Colt Edgerrin James a championship ring. "Edge" had been a Colt for seven years, and even though he was gone when they won the big one, the team and the coaching staff felt as though James had contributed in building the team that won it all, so they awarded him a ring. This got me wondering which people, in an extended Phillies phamily , would be deserving of a 2008 World Series Champions ring. I heard an interview with Mike Schmidt, in the days that followed the Series, and when asked if he thought he'd get a ring, he said, "They have my (ring) size." Schmidt, the Hall of Fame thirdbaseman , was a long time Phillie, a one time coach of the single-A Clearwater Threshers (where he managed World Series MVP Cole Hamels ) and appears as a guest hitting instructor in Phillies spring training every year.
