Six others to join Franco as Phils roster expands

Maikel Franco, image- Jay Floyd As was widely reported on Monday, the Phillies are slated to promote third baseman/first baseman Maikel Franco to the big leagues with the expansion of rosters in September. The right-handed hitting Franco, who turned 22-years-old last week, pledged in an interview for Phillies Nation's television program in late June that he was about to turn on the offense and he came through on that promise. After sporting a .209 average with 22 extra base hits in 78 games through the end of June, the Dominican Republic native tallied a .324 average with 31 extra base hits in the 55 games that followed for Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Also joining Franco among players moving from the IronPigs to the majors are relievers Mike Adams , Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez and Luis Garcia , utility man Cesar Hernandez , catcher Cameron Rupp and outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. The righty Adams had been rehabbing an injured throwing shoulder after being sidelined in early June. ...

Giles promoted to majors, Adams to the DL

Kenny Giles, image- Jay Floyd In a week packed with Phillies organizational transactions, one of the most anticipated ones occurred.  With veteran right-hander Mike Adams sidelined with shoulder concerns, the Phillies promoted promising reliever Kenny Giles to the big leagues. Giles is an overpowering right-hander whose fastball is often clocked at 100 MPH or higher.  Additionally armed with an improving slider, Giles has the making of a back-end-of-the-bullpen hurler. In 24 games combined with Double-A Reading and Triple-A Lehigh Valley this season, the 23-year-old tallied a 2-0 record with 12 saves, a 1.88 ERA and an 11.93 K/9 mark. The Phils' 7th round draft pick from 2011, Giles, was the focus of a recent feature on Phillies Nation TV.  Check that out in the media player below. Adams, who missed time earlier this season with a shoulder strain, has a 2-1 record with a 2.12 ERA in 19 games this season.

Buchanan continues to shine, wins IronPigs opener

David Buchanan with Reading in 2013, Image- Jay Floyd Righty pitcher David Buchanan , building on his excellent spring season with the Phillies, put forth a great effort to open the Triple-A schedule with Lehigh Valley on Thursday night, leading his team to victory. Taking the mound as the IronPigs' opening day starter against Boston affiliate Pawtucket, the 24-year-old tossed six scoreless innings while allowing two hits, two walks and notching five strike outs. Buchanan has displayed considerable improvement over the past year and received positive feedback from the likes of Roy Halladay , Cliff Lee , A.J. Burnett and Kyle Kendrick while pitching with the big league team in spring training. Coaches and veterans alike were pleased with his pace, the way he attacks the strike zone and his manner of challenging opposing batters. The uplifting words had a lasting impact on the Georgia native and he's experienced a boost in confidence because of it. "It's s...
