The PhoulBallz Questionnaire

This week I came up with a quick questionnaire and asked 10 Phillies phans, 9 of which are Phils partial season ticket holders, 10 questions ranging from survey type inquiries to statistical trivia. My goal was to survey both genders in varying age groups. I spoke with 3 season ticket holding 50-something males. I spoke with 2 season ticket holding 30-something females. I spoke with 2 teenage males whose father is a season ticket holder (for the purpose of this small project, they've been counted as season ticket holders in the 9 out of 10 total). I asked a 25 year old male season ticket holder and a 30-or-so year old male season ticket holder. And lastly, I asked a 28 year old non-season ticket holding die-hard Phils phan.

The questions are mostly Phillies oriented, with some generalized baseball trivia mixed in. Have a look at the questionnaire. See how you do, but don't research the answers that you may have a hard time with.

1- Name a Phillie who wore #4.

2- Name a Phillie whose first or last name begins with the letter "B".

3- Name a Phils manager who didn't go to the World Series as a Phillie.

4- Name a Phillies Wall of Famer who isn't in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

5- Name a Phils pitcher who didn't play in the World Series as a Phillie, but was an all star as a Phillie.

6- How many HR's did Mike Schmidt hit in his regular season career?

7- What Hall of Famer had the most hits in his career?

8- #42 is retired across MLB for what player?

9- Name every year that the Phillies have played in the World Series (there are 7).

10- In what year was the designated hitter first used in MLB?

Maybe you did well, maybe you didn't. But, would you expect the ladies who participated to be less knowledgeable? Would you expect the 50-something guys to have an easier time with this because they've watched baseball the longest? What answers do you think a 16 year old lid would give? You might be surprised.

The two ladies who took the survey got 3 and 4 answers correct, respectively. The first two items about #4 and the letter B name seem easy and might be no-brainers to some...but two of the men and one of the teens couldn't come up with a Phillie who wore #4.

For the #4 question, 2 David Bell's were given (the 16 yr old and a lady), 4 Lenny Dykstra's were given (25 yr old, 2 50-somethings & 30-something male) and an Eric Bruntlett was tossed in also (by the 2nd lady).

No one failed to name a Phillie with a B name. I thought it would be interesting, through genders and ages, to see who said which Phillie. The 16 year old gave the lone Mike Bourn answer. Two of the 50-somethings gave Jim Bunning as an answer. Three Pat Burrell's were given (the younger teen, the 25 year old and one of the ladies). Brad Lidge was also answered (by the 28 yr old male) . Bobby Abreu was tossed out by the 30-something male. Fresh in the news, Brian Schneider was given by one of the 50-somethings, and Eric Bruntlett was answered by one of the women.

Naming a Phillies manager who didn't go to the World Series as a Phillie ruled out only 7 guys of the dozens and dozens of men who've ran the team over the years, but 2 people (younger teen and one of the ladies) still had trouble giving a correct answer there. The most commonly given manager was Terry Francona, who was named 4 times (28 yr old male, one of the 50-somethings, the 30-something male and one of the ladies). Also named were Gary Varsho by the 16 yr old, Nick Leyva by the 25 yr old, Gene Mauch by one of the 50-somethings and Frank Lucchesi by the remaining 50-something.

Naming a Phils Wall of Famer not in the Baseball Hall of Fame was difficult for the crowd. Just 4 correct answers were given. The 16 yr old and a 50-something male answered Juan Samuel, while Larry Bowa (25 yr old male) and John Vukovich (30-something male) were the other correct answers.

Another question that I was very interested to see the replies for was naming a Phillies all star pitcher who never played in a World Series with the Phillies. 5 of the 10 phans gave correct answers on this one. Ricky Bottalico was the most common, given 3 times (by the 16 yr old, a 50-something and the 30-something). Tom Gordon (by the younger teen) and Tyler Green (by the 28 yr old) were the other correct replies given.

Mike Schmidt's homerun total and the debut of the designated hitter question gave people the most trouble of all the questions. Only 2 phans gave correct answers for both questions. The 25 yr old and the younger teen were the only ones to correctly state Schmidt's career total of 548. The 25 yr old knew that the DH was first used in 1973...one of the ladies correctly guessed that yr.

Three people knew that Ty Cobb is the Hall of Fame's hit leader. One of the 50-somethings, the 25 yr old male and the 30-something male named the baseball great. Two people incorrectly guessed Pete Rose, but as we well know, he's not in the Hall of Fame.

Nine out of ten people knew that Jackie Robinson was that man who #42 was retired for, across MLB (one of the ladies missed that one).

The World Series years question was only answered correctly by 3 people...the 16 yr old, one of the 50-something men and the 25 yr old. The younger teen, the 28 yr old man and one of the ladies could name 6 of the 7.

All of this information, in my opinion was stuff that a true die-hard phan should have a grasp on. No offense to those who took the survey and gave wrong answers or struggled to reply with anything. I do not look down upon you...instead I encourage you to stay tuned more closely to PhoulBallz.com, where we embrace the Phillies organization's history and aim to help you get your learn on, every day.

Thanks to everyone who participated- Jaimie, Nikki, Aaron, Jackson, Joe, Eric, Ralph, Barry, Mark and Chris. If you've read this and you'd like to chime in with how you did on the questionnaire, post a comment and let everyone know.

Good stuff. No surprise people don't know when the DH really started...I feel like baseball fans today grew up with it and its origin is irrelevant to them.

It's sad that the DH has come to be so readily accepted. It's bad for baseball...

A great manager answer would've been Danny Ozark, so close and yet so far!

Where did I place in all of this???

What a cool idea. That was really interesting to see the results. You picked the perfect questions too: not too easy, not too hard. Good read.

Thanks, Amanda. Uh...I wanted to survey more people, but speaking to people took longer than I thought and I didn't want to make it a huge project.

I thought I would get a wide selection of answers and I did for the most part. I was a little disappointed that more people didn't know Schmitty's HR total....other than that, all was good with it.

Mark, you had 4 wrong answers. WOF/HOF, #20's HR total, Hit leader, Dh debut.

All I Want For "the Holidays" is the MLB Network

Ladies and gentlemen, there are 5 days left till Hannukah, 9 days left till Christmas and 16 days left till the premiere of the MLB Network. It's about time. Those of you that enjoy MLB.com's original programming, it may be a while till your favorite hosts appear on The MLB Network. The announced TV schedule is not similar to MLB.com's online schedule. MLB.com's studios are in NYC, and the MLB Network's studios will be in Secaucus NJ...so that's another bump in the road. Cross overs, while possible, might be less likely. The great internet programming on MLB.com includes morning and afternoon talk shows, a midday fantasy advice call-in show, a lunch time talk show and variety half hour formatted show, and of course the nightly wrap up, as well as other original programming that focuses more on the history of the game. MLB.com's programming started as streaming radio shows, then upgraded to a visual medium when video feeds were provided for the same sho...

Hockey Taking Over CBP

The takeover has begun. As the holiday season approaches and winter becomes more imminent, January 2nd, the date of this season's NHL Winter Classic draws nearer. In 2012, Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park will play host to the annual regular season hockey contest that is broadcast on national television. The ballpark is otherwise home to Major League Baseball's Phillies. In the upcoming game, the Flyers will take on New York Rangers. It will be New York's first Winter Classic appearance, while the Flyers, who lost at Boston in 2010, will be seeing action in the annual event for the second time. This will mark the fifth year for the NHL's premiere regular season contest, which first took place in 2008 at Buffalo's Ralph Wilson Stadium, home of the NFL's Bills. The process to convert the baseball playing field into an ice rink, in time for the week of hockey events set to take place at CBP, began this week. In addition to the January 2nd regular season...

Division Lead Back to 3 Games

Six shut out innings by the bullpen, a diving catch by Jayson Werth and two homeruns by Chase Utley won the game for the Phillies and got their lead in the NL East back to 3 games over the Metropolitans. It was a surprising effort from the bullpen as Scott Eyre, JC Romero, Jack Taschner, Chad Durbin, Ryan Madson and even Chan Ho Park shut down the Mets lineup in the extra inning victory. It was a risky play by Werth, who could have allowed the winning run to score if he hadn't made the catch on the ball batted by David Wright. It was clutch hitting by Utley, who, with his second homerun of the game, gave the Phillies an 11th inning lead that they would not let up. Huge win for the Phillies! ------------------------- Stats to ponder- Jimmy Rollins in the lead off spot this season- 49 games, .208 avg (47-for-226), .244 OBP, 1 HR, 29 runs. Jimmy Rollins batting any place else in the lineup this season- 7 games, .409 avg (9-for-22), .440 OBP, 3 HR, 6 runs. Carlos Ruiz against the Mets ...
