Phillies select SS Bryson Stott with first round pick

With the 14th overall selection in the 2019 MLB amateur draft, the Phillies selected lefty batting shortstop Bryson Stott.

Stott, a UNLV junior, is listed at six-foot-three and 200 pounds. In 58 games this year in the college season, he posted a .356 average with 10 home runs, 36 RBI and 16 steals. Additionally, he boasted a .486 on base percentage.

Plate discipline is said to be a feature quality for the talented youngster, who can work the count and hit to all fields.

Defensively, Stott is said to possess outstanding range and has a strong arm. He has the skills to stay on the left side of the infield.

The selection of Stott marks the fifth straight year the Phils have selected an offensive player with their top pick.

A native of Las Vegas, Stott's father Derek played football at UNLV in the late '80's and early '90's.

The Phillies were represented in New Jersey at the MLB draft by former pitcher Tommy Greene.

The team does not possess a second round pick this year, as it was forfeited when they signed Bryce Harper.

The Phillies' next pick in the draft will come in the third round at 91st overall.

Rounds three through 10 of the draft will take place on Tuesday beginning at 1 PM Eastern.

Division Lead Back to 3 Games

Six shut out innings by the bullpen, a diving catch by Jayson Werth and two homeruns by Chase Utley won the game for the Phillies and got their lead in the NL East back to 3 games over the Metropolitans. It was a surprising effort from the bullpen as Scott Eyre, JC Romero, Jack Taschner, Chad Durbin, Ryan Madson and even Chan Ho Park shut down the Mets lineup in the extra inning victory. It was a risky play by Werth, who could have allowed the winning run to score if he hadn't made the catch on the ball batted by David Wright. It was clutch hitting by Utley, who, with his second homerun of the game, gave the Phillies an 11th inning lead that they would not let up. Ryan Madson is acting questionable

I've seen similar types of "poking fun" entries on other Phillies blogs. When this picture came across my desk today, I figured, "Why not...?" Ryan Madson was out on the town (Manayunk) over the weekend and was photographed acting pretty with a purse slung over his shoulder and being chummy with a friend of mine. Can I really call him a friend, if he's actually my friends' friend , and I only prank called him once? Sure, why the heck not?!
