PhoulBallz Interview: IronPigs' Guthrie talks success

Dalton Guthrie, image- Jay Floyd
Versatile prospect Dalton Guthrie is producing extremely well with Triple-A Lehigh Valley and has begun opening some eyes.

The 25-year-old that plays various positions on defense (2b, 3b, SS, CF, LF just this season) opened the 2021 campaign with Double-A Reading, but since his promotion to the IronPigs, Guthrie has torched the opposition.  Through 27 games, he has posted a .357 average with 12 doubles, two home runs, 11 RBI and a pair of stolen bases.

Guthrie, a 6th round draft pick by the Phillies back in 2017 out of the University of Florida, is the son of former big leaguer Mark Guthrie.

This week I talked with Dalton about his remarkable season, growing up around professional baseball and more.  Read ahead for excerpts of that interview.

-You're having a great season.  Congratulations on your success.  What do you attribute the excellent production to with Lehigh Valley?

I think I was forced to make a swing adjustment early in the year when I struggled and that has helped.  My Double-A hitting coach kept working with me and helped tweak some things.

-Was that Tyler Henson?  And can you describe what the adjustments were?

Yes, it was.  He told me to lift my hands up as high as I could.  Early in the year they were at around my chest. He told me he wanted me to lift them up higher to help me handle the ball away.  I started to think down to the ball when my hands were up instead of up to the ball and I’ve hit the ball better.

-You've been so versatile on defense...is there a spot you feel more comfortable and does moving around add to the challenge of the game and possibly help keep you sharp?

I like to tell myself I feel comfortable wherever they put me and try not to think about it too much.  It can be challenging at times but I enjoy the role.

All I Want For "the Holidays" is the MLB Network

Ladies and gentlemen, there are 5 days left till Hannukah, 9 days left till Christmas and 16 days left till the premiere of the MLB Network. It's about time. Those of you that enjoy MLB.com's original programming, it may be a while till your favorite hosts appear on The MLB Network. The announced TV schedule is not similar to MLB.com's online schedule. MLB.com's studios are in NYC, and the MLB Network's studios will be in Secaucus NJ...so that's another bump in the road. Cross overs, while possible, might be less likely. The great internet programming on MLB.com includes morning and afternoon talk shows, a midday fantasy advice call-in show, a lunch time talk show and variety half hour formatted show, and of course the nightly wrap up, as well as other original programming that focuses more on the history of the game. MLB.com's programming started as streaming radio shows, then upgraded to a visual medium when video feeds were provided for the same sho...

Hockey Taking Over CBP

The takeover has begun. As the holiday season approaches and winter becomes more imminent, January 2nd, the date of this season's NHL Winter Classic draws nearer. In 2012, Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park will play host to the annual regular season hockey contest that is broadcast on national television. The ballpark is otherwise home to Major League Baseball's Phillies. In the upcoming game, the Flyers will take on New York Rangers. It will be New York's first Winter Classic appearance, while the Flyers, who lost at Boston in 2010, will be seeing action in the annual event for the second time. This will mark the fifth year for the NHL's premiere regular season contest, which first took place in 2008 at Buffalo's Ralph Wilson Stadium, home of the NFL's Bills. The process to convert the baseball playing field into an ice rink, in time for the week of hockey events set to take place at CBP, began this week. In addition to the January 2nd regular season...
