Cutters' Green Wins NY-Penn League HR Derby

Prior to Tuesday's New-York Penn League All-Star Game, rising Phillies third base prospect Zach Green took down his short-season Class A competition, which included his Williamsport teammate Gabriel Lino, to lock down the league's annual home run derby title.

In the opening round, Green, the Phils' 3rd round draft choice last year out of Jesuit High School in California, slammed three homers while tallying 290 points. The total was good enough to knock off six others, advancing the 19-year-old to the finals where he faced Lino, a catcher that was acquired last year from Baltimore in the Jim Thome deal. The 20-year-old Venezuelan also had three home runs in the initial round while posting 240 points.

The pair of Crosscutters went homerless in the finals, but Green, the league's leader in home runs (10) and total bases (101) edged Lino on points, by a margin of 170-100 to lock down the crown.

In the actual game, the American League affiliate All-Star team downed the National League club, which included the Tri-City ValleyCats (Astros) in order to keep the teams even at seven organizations each, in walk-off fashion. After trailing 3-2 heading into the 9th inning, the American squad tied the contest on a lead-off homer by Ryan Huck (Oakland) and four batters later, with one down, Oscar Hernandez (Tampa Bay) grounded into a fielders choice, that couldn't be turned for a double play, to plate the winning run and give the American League team a 4-3 victory.

Tyler Buckley, Williamsport's 22-year-old righty reliever, recorded a scoreless frame, striking out one. Starting outfielder Jiandido Tromp, 19, went 0-for-2, while Green and Lino, who entered the game as replacements, also were each hitless in two turns during the exhibition.

With the Crosscutters this season, the righty batting Green sports a .267/.347/.529 line and a .908 fielding percentage at the hot corner.

Williamsport (25-27) is in fourth place in the NYPL's Pinckney Division, seven games behind division leading Jamestown and five game behind wild card leading State College.

Hockey Taking Over CBP

Division Lead Back to 3 Games

Six shut out innings by the bullpen, a diving catch by Jayson Werth and two homeruns by Chase Utley won the game for the Phillies and got their lead in the NL East back to 3 games over the Metropolitans. It was a surprising effort from the bullpen as Scott Eyre, JC Romero, Jack Taschner, Chad Durbin, Ryan Madson and even Chan Ho Park shut down the Mets lineup in the extra inning victory. It was a risky play by Werth, who could have allowed the winning run to score if he hadn't made the catch on the ball batted by David Wright. It was clutch hitting by Utley, who, with his second homerun of the game, gave the Phillies an 11th inning lead that they would not let up. Ryan Madson is acting questionable

I've seen similar types of "poking fun" entries on other Phillies blogs. When this picture came across my desk today, I figured, "Why not...?" Ryan Madson was out on the town (Manayunk) over the weekend and was photographed acting pretty with a purse slung over his shoulder and being chummy with a friend of mine. Can I really call him a friend, if he's actually my friends' friend , and I only prank called him once? Sure, why the heck not?!
