Series Preview: Marlins at Phillies, June 3-5

The Marlins (16-41) come to town to take on the division rival Phillies (27-30) in a three-game series that begins at Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park on Monday night.

Right-hander Tom Koehler will open the series on the mound for Miami. Koehler has yet to lock down a win thus far in his brief big league career. The Phils will counter with righty Kyle Kendrick, who has been victorious in nine straight decisions against the Marlins.

The Phillies have won six of 10 meetings with the Marlins this season.

Monday, 7:05 PM. Tom Koehler (0-3, 3.22 ERA) vs. Kyle Kendrick (5-3, 3.27 ERA). Koehler, an 18th round draft pick by the Marlins in 2008, has allowed three earned runs in 2 2/3 career innings against the Phillies. The Koehler has a 4.42 ERA in six road outings this season. In six home starts this season, Kendrick is 3-2 with a 4.17 ERA. Kendrick notched a win in his last start against Miami when he threw seven innings, allowing two runs on May 2nd. Chris Coghlan is 5-for-12 (.417 avg) against Kendrick in his career.

Tuesday, 7:05 PM. Ricky Nolasco (3-6, 3.69 ERA) vs. Jonathan Pettibone (4-1, 3.64 ERA). In 20 career games against the Phillies Nolasco is 8-6 with a 3.85 ERA. The righty Nolasco is 1-3 with a 3.16 ERA in six road starts this season. Domonic Brown is 6-for-12 (.500 avg) with a double, a triple and a homer in his career against Nolasco. In five home starts, Pettibone has a 2-1 record along with a 2.97 ERA. Pettibone is 0-1 with a 4.00 ERA in his last three starts.

Wednesday, Jacob Turner (1-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Cole Hamels (1-9, 4.86 ERA). Turner, who was the Tigers' first round pick in 2009, was acquired by the Marlins in the Omar Infante/Anibal Sanchez deal last summer. The right-handed Turner posted a 3-4 record with a 4.47 ERA in 10 starts with Triple-A New Orleans. Turner threw seven scoreless innings in his only other big league start this year against the Mets on May 31st. In six home starts this season, Hamels has a 0-5 record with a 6.05 ERA. Hamels is 0-2 with a 2.25 ERA in three starts against the Marlins this year. Greg Dobbs is 1-for-8 in his career against Hamels.

Outfielder Justin Ruggiano leads the Marlins in home runs with eight and RBI with 22, but the 31-year-old is batting .209 this season.

Juan Pierre is a .306 career hitter against the Phillies. Pierre is batting .161 with runners in scoring position this season.

In 26 road games this season, Greg Dobbs is batting .217 with a home run and eight RBI. Dobbs is a .270 hitter with 13 HR in 246 games at Citizens Bank Park.

Domonic Brown, who was named National League player of the month for May, is batting .290 with 10 home runs and 22 RBI in 27 home games this year. Brown has a .267 average with six homers and 19 RBI in 29 games against the Marlins.

The 22-year-old sports a 5-1 record with a 3.14 ERA and a .210 batting average against in 10 starts for the IronPigs this season. He could take the place of Velasquez if he is required to miss any additional time. Initial word on Velasquez after he threw two fastballs that clocked in the 86-87 MPH range (considerably slower than the 94 MPH he averages) and was swiftly pulled from his outing, is that he has a biceps strain.
