Series Preview: Braves at Phillies, 9/20-9/22

The Philadelphia Phillies (89-61) and Atlanta Braves (86-64) will meet 6 more times over the final 12 games of the season to potentially decide the winner of the National League East. The Phils sport a 3 game lead over Atlanta, and could lock in their strangle hold on the division as a 3-game series starts in Philadelphia on Monday night.

Atlanta has won 5 of the last 6 meetings with Philadelphia, but the Phillies have gone 18-4 since being swept at home by the Astros last month. A key of the Phils' strong run is their trio of ace starting pitchers. Since the Phillies acquired Roy Oswalt from Houston July 29th, Oswalt, Roy Halladay and Cole Hamels have posted a combined 16-6 record. The three hurlers have also combined for a 2.27 ERA in August and September.

The Braves, who have dropped 9 of 18 games this month, will send Jair Jurrjens to the mound to change the team's fortunes. The Phillies will counter with left-hander Cole Hamels, who has a 6.39 ERA in 3 starts against the Braves this season.

Read ahead for details on the pitching match ups for this series as well as plenty more statistics and information.

Monday, 7:05pm. Jair Jurrjens (7-6, 4.64 ERA) vs. Cole Hamels (11-10, 3.01 ERA). Jurrjens has been experiencing knee trouble and could be skipped. In 9 career starts against the Phillies, the righty Jurrjens has a 3-3 record with a 2.56 ERA. Jurrjens has posted a 1-4 record with a 5.81 ERA in 10 road starts this season. In 5 career starts at Citizens Bank Park, Jurrjens is 2-1 with a 1.87 ERA. In his last 5 starts, Hamels is 4-0 with a 0.76 ERA. In 17 career starts against Atlanta, Hamels is 8-5 with a 4.25 ERA. Omar Infante is 10-for-26 (.385 avg) against Hamels in his career.

Tuesday, 7:05pm. Mike Minor (3-1, 5.84 ERA) vs. Roy Halladay (19-10, 2.49 ERA). The rookie Minor is 1-0 with a 6.75 ERA in 3 road games thus far. Minor, a lefty, was Atlanta's first round draft pick in 2009. In 4 career games against the Braves, Halladay has a 3-0 record with a 0.63 ERA. At home this season, Halladay is 11-5 with a 2.12 ERA in 17 starts.

Wednesday, 7:05pm. Tommy Hanson (10-11, 3.62 ERA) vs. Roy Oswalt (13-13, 2.90 ERA). In 15 road starts this season, Hanson is 5-6 with a 3.44 ERA. In his last 5 starts, Hanson is 2-2 with a 4.06 ERA. In 13 starts since the All-star break, Hanson has posted a 2-6 record with a 2.98 ERA. In his last 9 starts, Oswalt is 7-0 with a 1.57 ERA. In 7 career starts against Atlanta, Oswalt is 0-3 with a 7.58 ERA.

Omar Infante is batting .323 in 10 games against the Phillies this season. Infante's .337 batting would rank second in the league, but he does not currently have enough plate appearances to qualify.

Jason Heyward's 9 steals are the highest total on the Braves team.

In 11 games against the Phillies this season, Brian McCann is batting .229. McCann is 1-for-15 (.067 avg) in his career against JC Romero.

In 28 career games against the Braves, JC Romero has a 1.19 ERA and a .110 batting average against.

Placido Polanco is just 1-for-14 (.071 avg) in his career against Braves closer Billy Wagner. In 18 games this month, Polanco has posted a .247 batting average.

Lidge Shaky, T-Mac Honored in Trenton

TRENTON, NJ- Brad Lidge made his second rehab appearance for the Double A Reading Phillies on Thursday night and it didn't go as well as the veteran reliever or the team had hoped. Lidge struggled with his command and turned in a rather poor outing for the club that entered the night in a playoff race, 1 game behind division rival Trenton for the Wild Card spot in the Eastern Division. On the disabled list since spring training with a strained right rotator cuff, Lidge experienced an elbow strain when he was working back from that issue in late May. In his outing against the Yankees affiliate in Trenton, Lidge displayed difficulty with his control as he threw three wild pitches, hit two batters, walked another and gave up a single, all while letting up two earned runs on 28 pitches in 2/3 of an inning. After the disappointing performance, Lidge was composed and focused on some positive aspects, having reached 89 and 90 MPH on scouts' radar guns, according to some reports. ...

Jason Knapp Q&A

PhoulBallz .com was fortunate enough to meet with Phillies prospect Jason Knapp just one day after he caught the attention of the baseball world with his 7 shut out innings, 14 strike out performance against the Indians' Lake County team. - I asked Jason, the Lakewood BlueClaw , for some thoughts about his big game... I had pretty good command of three pitches (fastball, curve, change up). I was on the same page with my catcher, D'Arnaud , and I ended up, ya know, I felt pretty good. - In a great performance like that, how much credit goes to Travis D'Arnaud , the catcher? More than you might expect, definitely. I didn't shake him off once. He told me what to throw and I do what I'm told. And if it works out, a lot of the credit goes to the catcher. - Does the lack of run support (Lakewood has scored 3 total runs in his 3 starts), in your few starts, increase your stress level, or enhance your focus? No, I just try to go out and do my job every outing. Ya know, we...

Eric B Needs to be Cut (and My Name is Rakim)

While the Phillies are on a hot streak this month, one player on the team is not. Eric Bruntlett is 1-for-12 in July. Since the start of May, Bruntlett's apex in batting average has been .167 on June 14th. Bruntlett's ineptitude can be tolerated no longer. Get rid of this guy NOW! Eric B. is the 2009 Endy Chavez. Remember Endy...the guy who in 2005 managed just 2 hits in his final 42 games played as a Phillie? That is about the sort of output the Phillies are getting from Bruntlett, and it's time to fix this void. Julio Lugo was designated for assignment last week by the Red Sox and is expected to become a free agent. The Metropolitans are rumored to be interested. Why wouldn't the Phillies be interested in a guy who could surely outhit Bruntlett? Lugo was hitting .284 through 37 games played this season with Boston. Suspended Lehigh Valley IronPig Pablo Ozuna is eligible to return next Wednesday. Ozuna is batting .294 through 51 games at triple A. Miguel Cairo is also...
