Madson Out Two Months or More

On Tuesday, Phillies reliever Ryan Madson had successful surgery on his right great toe, that he injured in the wake of a blown save last week in San Francisco. Madson broke the toe by kicking a chair in frustration, as detailed in this article.

The procedure involved placing two pins in Madson's toe. The pins are expected to be removed in about 4 weeks, provided the healing process is on schedule. Early estimates have Madson missing at least 8 weeks, as he will not be able to put a significant amount of weight on the foot until the pins are removed.

The team plans to keep Madson's arm strong through modified exercises, like throwing from his knees or from a sitting position. A clear plan for physical rehabilitation will be available until Madson can resume putting weight on the foot.

General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. spoke of Madson's situation's impact on the team, "Well, it's a concern he's out that long, there's no question about that. It's a pretty major blow to our bullpen."

Amaro Jr. also spoke of the effect Madson's absence will have on the Phillies' bullpen. "It puts guys in different roles perhaps, but we're going to have to deal with it", Amaro said. And perhaps as Madson's recovery time becomes more clear, Amaro Jr. will forced to consider making additions to the pitching staff the team otherwise would have not needed to make.

Speaking from personal experience, I had a similar break in my hand that required one pin. My recovery was lengthier than is being estimated here for Madson, and my hand is not weight bearing. Madson will need to execute plenty of therapy on his foot and lower leg after not using that part of his body for a stretch of time.

2022 Top Phillies Prospects Countdown: #13 OF Ethan Wilson

Taken with the Phillies' second round draft pick (49th overall) last year, outfielder Ethan Wilson has landed among the top prospects in the organization. A co-freshman of the year in 2019, with South Alabama, Wilson has been on the radar of some big league teams for quite a while.  In his junior season last year, Wilson batted .313 with seven home runs and 30 RBI.  When his collegiate season was through, the lefty hitter quickly debuted in the minors.   In 30 games with Class A Clearwater last year, Wilson tallied a .215 average with three homers, 17 RBI and two steals. Listed at six-foot-one, 210-pounds, Wilson opened the 2022 campaign with Class A Advanced Jersey Shore.  The 22-year-old has been slow to start offensively, but confidence and poise are not a problem for this strong, promising individual. On the base paths, Wilson is quick and can contribute with his feet.  Defensively, the Alabama native will likely play left or right field moving forward.  Possessing an ability t

Ryan Madson is acting questionable

I've seen similar types of "poking fun" entries on other Phillies blogs. When this picture came across my desk today, I figured, "Why not...?" Ryan Madson was out on the town (Manayunk) over the weekend and was photographed acting pretty with a purse slung over his shoulder and being chummy with a friend of mine. Can I really call him a friend, if he's actually my friends' friend , and I only prank called him once? Sure, why the heck not?!
