Game Preview: Phillies @ Nationals, 4/7/10

Wednesday, 7:05pm. Cole Hamels (2009 stats- 10-11, 4.32 ERA) vs. Jason Marquis (2009 stats- 15-13, 4.04 ERA). In 15 career games against Washington, Hamels is 7-3 with a 2.30 ERA and a .219 batting average against. In 15 road games last year, Hamels had a 3-6 record with a 4.99 ERA. In 2 previous starts at Nationals Park, Hamels has not allowed a run in 14 1/3 innings. Jason Marquis (who we last spoke of on PhoulBallz.com in this post) has a 5-3 record and a 4.38 ERA in 19 career games against the Phils. Marquis earned a win in his only start against the Phillies last season, allowing just 2 earned runs in 7 innings.

Jimmy Rollins struggles against Marquis. In his career, Rollins is 4-for-34 (.118 avg) against Marquis. Chase Utley does not struggle against Marquis, however. Ultey is 8-for-18 (.444 avg) against Marquis. Jayson Werth is 6-for-9 (.667 avg) with 2 doubles, 2 homers and a 2.306 OPS. against Marquis.

Adam Dunn has a rough time facing Cole Hamels. Against Hamels in his career, Dunn is 1-for-12 (.083 avg).

In 42 career games against the Nationals Ryan Madson has a 2-2 record and 3 saves with a 5.26 ERA. Cristian Guzman is 6-for-9 (.667 avg) in his career against Madson. Ryan Zimmerman is 8-for-19 (.421 avg) against Madson in his career.

The Phils won 15 and lost just 3 against the Nats last season.

**Update** The Phillies claimed 35-year-old right handed pitcher Nelson Figueroa off waivers from the Metropolitans today. Figueroa, a former Phillie, is expected to be added to the Major League bullpen. In 16 games with New York last season, Figueroa had a 3-8 record with a 4.09 ERA.

Eflin with Reading in 2015, image- Jay Floyd Following Vincent Velasquez leaving his start after just two pitches for the Phillies on Wednesday, righty prospect Zach Eflin was pulled from his start for Triple-A Lehigh Valley at Gwinnett. The 22-year-old sports a 5-1 record with a 3.14 ERA and a .210 batting average against in 10 starts for the IronPigs this season. He could take the place of Velasquez if he is required to miss any additional time. Initial word on Velasquez after he threw two fastballs that clocked in the 86-87 MPH range (considerably slower than the 94 MPH he averages) and was swiftly pulled from his outing, is that he has a biceps strain.
