Who's Next?

With a steady mix of new pitchers rotating through the Phillies' club house recently, one can only wonder, "who is next?" Pitchers like Sergio Escalona, Tyler Walker, Kyle Kendrick, Antonio Bastardo and Andrew Carpenter have all made visits to the big league roster this season as call ups and fill-ins. One name that most phans are familiar with and likely expected to see in a Phillies uniform sooner than later is Carlos Carrasco. Carrasco, however, has been a considerable disappointment at the triple A level, going 1-7 with a 5.56 ERA, over 12 starts this season for Lehigh Valley. A name that could soon surpass Carrasco on the Phils' prospect list is lefty Joe Savery. Savery, a former top draft pick of the Phillies out of Rice University, is quickly mowing through double A opposition. He won his 8th game today for the Reading Phillies and lowered his ERA to 3.47. Savery has lost just one game in his 13 starts.


Phillies phans who don't live close enough to make the trip to Reading to see Philadelphia's budding talent might be interested to know that, as of know, the Reading rotation should have Joe Savery starting game 1 of a 4 game set in Trenton, against the Yankees affiliate Thunder, on Friday, June 26th. That projected pitching schedule is, of course, barring rain outs and other unforeseeable changes.

I've always been a fan of Savery for some reason. He was also a pretty good hitter in college.

The reality of it all is that Savery could be a guy who never plays in the majors for the Phils...but will excel some place else, like Josh Outman is doing in Oakland.

Joe Savery could very well be building his return value up, and I am sure the front office is loving his output thus far.

TRENTON, NJ- Brad Lidge made his second rehab appearance for the Double A Reading Phillies on Thursday night and it didn't go as well as the veteran reliever or the team had hoped. Lidge struggled with his command and turned in a rather poor outing for the club that entered the night in a playoff race, 1 game behind division rival Trenton for the Wild Card spot in the Eastern Division. On the disabled list since spring training with a strained right rotator cuff, Lidge experienced an elbow strain when he was working back from that issue in late May. In his outing against the Yankees affiliate in Trenton, Lidge displayed difficulty with his control as he threw three wild pitches, hit two batters, walked another and gave up a single, all while letting up two earned runs on 28 pitches in 2/3 of an inning. Eric B Needs to be Cut (and My Name is Rakim)

While the Phillies are on a hot streak this month, one player on the team is not. Eric Bruntlett is 1-for-12 in July. Since the start of May, Bruntlett's apex in batting average has been .167 on June 14th. Bruntlett's ineptitude can be tolerated no longer. Get rid of this guy NOW! Eric B. is the 2009 Endy Chavez. Remember Endy...the guy who in 2005 managed just 2 hits in his final 42 games played as a Phillie? That is about the sort of output the Phillies are getting from Bruntlett, and it's time to fix this void. Julio Lugo was designated for assignment last week by the Red Sox and is expected to become a free agent. The Metropolitans are rumored to be interested. Why wouldn't the Phillies be interested in a guy who could surely outhit Bruntlett? Lugo was hitting .284 through 37 games played this season with Boston.
