Another Series or Whatever....

That first place team that is struggling through every series lately plays in Toronto this weekend. Here is some information about the series if you can stand to read about them....

Friday 7:07pm. Cole Hamels (4-3, 4.24 ERA) vs. Ricky Romero (4-3, 3.59 ERA). Hamels' start was moved up one day, switched with "Jay" Happ. The move will project Hamels to make one more start prior to the 3 day all star break. It will also split up the rookie lefties Bastardo and Happ in the rotation. Cole has a 2.57 ERA in 4 starts this month. In 5 road starts this season, Hamels is 2-1 with a 4.85 ERA. Romero, the Blue Jays' first round draft pick in the 2005 amateur draft, has a 2.86 ERA in 4 starts this month. These pitchers faced each other in the June 16th game at Citizens Bank Park, but neither pitcher figured in the decision.

Saturday, 1:07pm. "Jay" Happ (4-0, 3.47 ERA) vs. Brad Mills (0-0, 9.82 ERA). Happ is 2-0 with a 2.00 ERA and a .192 batting avg. against in 8 games on the road this season. Happ's ERA is 4.08 in 6 games as a starter this season. Mills will be making his second Major League appearance.

Sunday, 1:07pm. Jamie Moyer (5-6, 5.97 ERA) vs. Brian Tallet (5-4, 4.36 ERA). Moyer is 14-9 with a 5.37 ERA in 38 career games against Toronto. Alex Rios, Aaron Hill, Marco Scutaro and Vernon Wells are a combined 46-for-114 (.403 avg.) with 7 homers and 19 RBI against Moyer in their careers. Tallet has a 3.86 ERA in 6 career games against the Phillies.

JC Romero has a 5.01 ERA in 22 career games (23 1/3 innings) against the Blue Jays.

Jimmy Rollins, in 15 career games against Toronto, has a .356 avg. (21-for-59), 11 runs scored and a 1.005 OPS.

Matt Stairs is a .291 career hitter at Rogers Centre (125-for-429) with a .908 OPS.

Rod Barajas may want to play the Phillies every day. In 2008 and 2009, Barajas is 8-for-16 (.500 avg) with 4 homers and 10 RBI.

Scott Rolen may feel the same as Rod. Rolen is a .340 career hitter (49-for-144) with 13 doubles and 3 homers in 38 games against the Phillies.

Q&A with Justin De Fratus

Justin De Fratus is a 21 year old right handed relief pitcher with the Lakewood BlueClaws. An 11th round draft choice in 2007, Justin had been a starter in his first two seasons in the Phillies organization. Informed this spring that he'd be switched from the rotation to the bullpen, Justin has excelled and become one of the most reliable pitchers on the Lakewood staff. 22-year-old pitching prospect Nick Hernandez's father helps him stay fit during the off-season Phillies pitching prospect Nick Hernandez spent much of the 2010 regular season on the disabled list with an injury to his throwing shoulder. The 6'4", 215 pound lefty, who was named a mid-season South Atlantic League all-star with the Class A Lakewood BlueClaws, attempted comebacks twice during the season, making rehab outings for the rookie level Gulf Coast League Phillies, but experienced setbacks that curtailed his return to the mound and kept him from helping his teammates lock down a second consecutive league championship for Lakewood. In 8 starts with the BlueClaws last season, the 12th round draft pick from 2009 posted a 3-1 record with a 1.61 ERA and averaged 7 innings per start. Hernandez's strength is throwing a lot of strikes and he owes some of his success to his father, also named Nick (Dad's full first name is spelled Nicolas, while son's name is spell...

Ring-a-ling

This week I heard old news about how when the Indianapolis Colts won the Super Bowl, they gave former Colt Edgerrin James a championship ring. "Edge" had been a Colt for seven years, and even though he was gone when they won the big one, the team and the coaching staff felt as though James had contributed in building the team that won it all, so they awarded him a ring. This got me wondering which people, in an extended Phillies phamily , would be deserving of a 2008 World Series Champions ring. I heard an interview with Mike Schmidt, in the days that followed the Series, and when asked if he thought he'd get a ring, he said, "They have my (ring) size." Schmidt, the Hall of Fame thirdbaseman , was a long time Phillie, a one time coach of the single-A Clearwater Threshers (where he managed World Series MVP Cole Hamels ) and appears as a guest hitting instructor in Phillies spring training every year.
